Imspex was successful in its recent SMARTCymru application for funding to further establish its BreathSpec® technology’s potential as a channel to boost economic recovery as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SMARTCymru-European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding will be used to further validate BreathSpec®’s capability for rapid detection of COVID-19 in clinical settings by means of breath analysis.
BreathSpec®’s to detecting COVID-19 infection in patients is already being investigated in an ongoing study at NHS Lothian’s world-renowned respiratory centre, the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. This study in Edinburgh aims to sample breath from up to 500 patients. It is being supported by Loughborough University, home to experts in breath analysis and boasts an early success in the form of robust feasibility findings that were published in The Lancet eClinicalMedicine in October 2020.
This round of SMARTCymru-ERDF funding will be used to replicate the Edinburgh study in Leicester at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
