Hepatocellular carcinoma urinary biomarker detection using GC-IMS

A team of clinical and engineering researchers from the University of Warwick, Coventry University and the University of Leicester recently confirmed the feasibility of identifying urinary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) biomarkers using the Imspex Group’s proprietary gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) technology. In a pilot study, volatile organic compound (VOC) peaks representative of HCC were identified in headspace analysis of urine using the FlavourSpec® device. These findings open up a non-invasive channel for detection of HCC and shed light on the course of the disease that is the third largest cause of cancer deaths globally.
