Agilent 490 Micro GC with IMS
The unique integration of an IMS detector into an existing GC such as Agilent’s 490 Micro GC opens up new horizons for convenience, accuracy and innovation for detection of sub-ppm VOCs in gases.
Joint projects can be undertaken to take advantage of the strongpoints of both partners’ instruments when legislative and customer requirements require. A case in point was combination of a G.A.S. IMS instrument together with an Agilent 490 Micro GC. The Agilent instrument is typically used in the field for situations requiring 24/7 monitoring (e.g. natural gas analysis/calorific value determination, biogas, bulk and trace analysis of refinery gas, stack gas, trace analysis of low sulphur in natural gas, oxygenates, halogenates and HCN). In this instance, advanced IMS electronics and adapted processing algorithms were developed and combined to enable optimal interfacing and coupled to a customised IMS channel. This allowed for 24/7 on-site monitoring and resulted in development of a new method.

Micro GC with IMS Applications
Some Micro GC-IMS use cases to date:
Low sulphur detection
Gas sourced from gas wells, refineries or landfills contain sulphur compounds that are odorous, toxic and corrosive to equipment in gas processing plants. GC-IMS has a strong history of being able to detect and identify these compounds. It is also able to quantify beneficial by-products such as CO2 that can then be used for agricultural or beverage purposes.
Propellant gas testing
Aerosol-based propellants can, under certain circumstances, be contaminated with VOCs. These impurities can cause off-flavours and lead to product rejections and customer complaints.
Odour source identification and support of industrial odour management
Micro GC with IMS technology allows measurement and monitoring of complex odour-containing VOC mixtures in the field in order to identify the source of these odours. Its portability and precision make a Micro GC with IMS ideal for on-site applications.
